When should you convert HEIC to PNG?

HEIC to PNG is useful when you plan to keep editing the decoded image, need pixel-stable output, or want to avoid another lossy JPEG encoding step. HEIC and HEIF files are decoded locally before PNG output is created.

Photographic PNG files are often much larger than JPG files. If your main goal is sharing or broad compatibility, HEIC to JPG is usually more practical.

Need to understand the source format first? Read what a HEIC file contains and when to keep it before choosing a PNG copy.

If the photo needs to be submitted or printed as a document, try HEIC to PDF. These HEIC tools also accept HEIF files.

What is HEIC to PNG conversion?

HEIC to PNG conversion decodes a HEIC photo and saves a new image in PNG format. It changes the encoding, not just the .heic filename extension. Keep the source if you need its original metadata or Apple photo features.

    Batch Convert HEIC to PNG

Select up to 10 files; conversion starts automatically and runs one file at a time. Download each completed PNG or use Download All (.zip) after the queue finishes. The ZIP includes successful results only, with a 100 MiB combined output limit; larger results remain available individually.

Each input is limited to 50 MiB. The header-based safety check blocks images above 45 megapixels when dimensions can be read. Above 20 MiB or 24 megapixels, a warning explains the memory risk. On phones, try smaller batches and keep the tab open; unsupported or damaged files can fail independently.

Convert HEIC to PNG Without Uploading

FileOnTap processes image contents locally in your browser using a HEIC decoder and PNG encoder. No photo upload or account is required. Loading the website, decoder assets and usage analytics still involves network requests; local conversion is not a promise of offline operation or zero tracking. Read the FileOnTap privacy policy.

    HEIC to PNG Quality Explained

PNG encodes the output pixels losslessly, so it avoids a further lossy encoding step. It cannot recover detail already lost in the source HEIC. Without losing quality does not mean a byte-identical archive: decoding, color conversion, HDR rendering and bit-depth changes may affect the result. FileOnTap does not guarantee original EXIF, HDR, color profiles or auxiliary-image preservation.

For the format distinction, see MDN image format guide and Apple HEIF and HEVC guidance. Keep the original when color fidelity or archival metadata matters.

Why Is a PNG File Larger Than HEIC?

HEIC commonly stores photos with efficient HEVC compression, while PNG uses lossless compression of the output pixels. Detailed or noisy photographs often compress less efficiently as PNG. Dimensions, source encoding, bit depth and metadata affect the result, so there is no fixed size multiplier. Compare actual output sizes before replacing your originals.

HEIC vs PNG: When Should You Use Each?

Use PNG when an editor or upload form specifically requires it, or for a broadly supported lossless editing copy. PNG supports transparency, but converting an ordinary opaque photo does not remove its background. Retain HEIC for compact photo storage and original Apple photo information. Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to PNG for free?

Choose up to 10 HEIC or HEIF files above. Conversion starts automatically; wait for each result, then download PNGs or a ZIP. No account or payment is required.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG without uploading my photos?

Yes. FileOnTap decodes and encodes photos in your browser, without sending image contents to a conversion server. Page assets and usage analytics still make network requests; see the Privacy page.

Does converting HEIC to PNG reduce quality?

PNG encodes the output pixels losslessly, but cannot restore detail already lost in a compressed HEIC. Decoding, color handling and bit-depth changes can affect the output; exact HDR, color and metadata preservation is not guaranteed.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files to PNG?

Yes. Select up to 10 files per batch. Files run sequentially with separate retry and download controls. ZIP contains successful results only and supports up to 100 MiB of combined output; download larger results individually.

    Does FileOnTap support HEIF files?

Yes, the tool accepts .heic and .heif still-image files supported by its decoder. An extension alone does not guarantee support for every HEIF codec or unusual variant. Live Photo video is not exported.

    What are the file limits?

Each input must be 50 MiB or less. The safety check rejects dimensions above 45 megapixels when available in the HEIF header; inputs above 20 MiB or 24 megapixels show a warning. Device memory may impose a lower practical limit.

    Will EXIF metadata be preserved?

FileOnTap creates a new PNG and does not promise to preserve original EXIF, depth data, HDR or Apple-specific features. Keep the original HEIC.

Can I change .heic to .png by renaming it?

No. Renaming changes the filename, not the image encoding. Use a converter to decode the HEIC and encode a real PNG.
